'The
Nab' is situated in Martindale in the heart of a red deer
conservation area, home to the oldest native red deer herd in
England. It is one of Wainwright's Peaks and is featured in
Book 2 "The Far Eastern Fells".
Walkers are requested
to keep to the preferred routes shown on signs and keep away from
the red deer at all times, especially during calving time. Although
there is now open access to 'The Nab' the area may be closed at
times between September and February for deer management and
possibly at other times as required. To avoid any
disappointment it is important to check that access will be
available before your visit.
For access please contact Martin Robinson at Thrang
Crag
Tel: 017684 86450 to establish whether there are any activities
with the deer, which would endanger walkers.
The accepted route of
ascent from Martindale is from Dalehead Farm where walkers should
follow the Patterdale path which goes through the wicket gate below
the farmhouse onto the fell. Following the boundary wall of
the fields the path slowly climbs up towards Angle Tarn. On
coming in sight of the Tarn swing east behind Buck Crag to the gate
at Satura Crag and then on to Rest Dodd and entry onto 'The Nab'.
Alternatively the
longer ascent is from Martindale old church climbing on the east
side of the valley above Gowk Hill onto High Street and then around
the head of the valley to The Knott and onto Rest Dodd as above.
