Ancient Apples at Dalemain

In the Garden:  We have been filling our beautiful and ancient apple store with this precious harvest. Why not go to the top of the garden and see it for yourself. It is 16th century and was not originally intended for apples but as a place for quiet contemplation and the occasional pipe looking out over to the fells. By the 1800’s oak shelves were constructed and apples are laid out so that they do not touch each other and can be stored until the spring.

Our range of apple trees become a history lesson of the apple and the needs of the household from the very early Crab apples to the modern day. There is Nonpariel from the 1500's, Wyken pippin from 1720, Keswick codlin from 1793, Beauty of Bath from 1834, Lanes Prince Albert from 1841, Peasgood Nonesuch from 1853, Newton Wonder from 1870 and finally Laxton Superb in 1897. A selection of apples from the garden are available to taste and buy in the tearoom with an apple themed menu.
