Food is packed as an individual portion or in portions of 2 and 4. The portions are in dishes that are suitable for the oven (individual portions are also suitable for the microwave where there is no pastry).
If you have a special event coming up, why not order your food from us? We can cater for large numbers and we even have china and cutlery available to help your party go with a swing.
The following is just a selection from the delicious dishes we are pleased to provide (subject to availability). Throughout the year various other dishes are available as well, to suit the season.
Our own popular soup made with tomato, onion and apple. (1 pint)
RICH PORK CASSEROLE
A mix of pork, prunes mushrooms and honey. Based on a centuries-old recipe, this dish goes extremely well with potatoes, noodles or rice.
Always a favourite. Made with tender minced beef and beef gravy, we think that this stands head and shoulders above most other Shepherd’s Pies.
This never fails - my children, my children's friends and their friends all put in requests for this dish when they are at Dalemain.
This is a recipe I have had since I first came to Dalemain. Researched by a very able cook, it combines lentils and tomatoes. Non-vegetarians love this dish, too!
RICH VENISON CASSEROLE
Go back to ‘Olde England’ when great feasting took place. We like this casserole which is very simple in its tastes using lean venison making an honest old fashioned dish.
LAMB WITH RHUBARB
An interesting dish with a variety of different ingredients, including mint and spices, but you are still able to identify the subtle taste of rhubarb and it feels good to be making a really Cumbrian dish of lamb and Dalemain rhubarb.
CUMBERLAND LAMB CASSEROLE
This is a recipe I have been searching for since having it at a supper party many years ago. It is an interesting combination of sweet and savoury ingredients which enhance the flavour of this good Cumberland lamb.
CHICKEN BREASTS IN ORANGE & TARRAGON CREAM
A dish fit for a light lunch, or a smarter evening meal. Tarragon and chicken make a perfect union, but when the orange is added, the dish is lifted to another echelon.
Delicious, short-crust pastry filled with apples from the Garden. It is a labour of love peeling them, but the result is very good.
SYRUP SPONGE PUDDING
This pudding has stood the test of time, and it is as popular today as it was in Mrs Beeton’s day. Very indulgent!
APPLE FLAPJACK CRUMBLE
Apples again but we had to add this on to the list—very like apple crumble but a slightly chewy flapjack and cinnamon top.

For the last two years Julia Stanton and Gina Farncombe have been painting portraits of people living in the Ullswater valley and last year they were joined by Beatrice Hasell-McCosh who is contributing landscapes. Together, they have painted farmers and other local residents born between the wars and who have lived in the valley for over 30 years.
