Jane Eyre at Dalemain

In London Weekend Television's production of Jane Eyre, Dalemain provides the exterior of Gateshead Hall, Jane's childhood home, and the Mediaeval Courtyard and 16th century Great Barn provide the exteriors and interiors of Lowood Institution.
The Reverend William Carus Wilson, nephew by marriage of Edward Hasell of Dalemain (1765 - 1826) founded the Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge (now Casterton School) and was the inspiration for the character of Mr Brocklehurst the founder of Lowood Institution.

Charlotte Brontë drew upon her unhappy memories of her stay at school for her heart-rending description of life at Lowood Institution.

Songs of Praise

The BBC filmed Songs of Praise at Dalemain Historic House & Gardens as part of the Eden Valley production which was broadcast in the summer of 2004

Diane Louise Jordan, one of the show’s most popular presenters, was filming in the enchanting gardens, picking apples from the ancient 18th century apple trees.

The young girls of the Amabile choir from Kendal were seen singing both in the Tudor Knot Garden, surrounding the fountain and on the stairs of the Entrance Hall.

Mrs Jane Hasell McCosh, who lives at Dalemain says “the garden was still looking fantastic during filming, even so late in the season. It changes every week and despite the long dry summer, visitors were able to enjoy the delights of the gardens right into the autumn. The Virginia creeper was turning a wonderful shade of red, and the white garden was looking fresh and charming. An abundance of colour from late flowering perennials, annuals and autumn leaves, added to the atmosphere of relaxing calm that makes a visit to Dalemain an absolute pleasure”.
