Dalemain (as listed by the Northern Screen Commission) offers the film-maker a wide variety of versatile locations.
Interior and exterior locations are available, including:
- The Mediaeval Hall (pictured above)
- The gravelled driveway to the front of the Mansion
- The Cobbled, mediaeval courtyard to the rear
- A huge, 16th century Great Barn
- Farm buildings and farm land
- Old agricultural equipment and props
- Moorland, rivers, becks, streams, waterfalls, fords, bridges...
- Private metalled and unmetalled roads
- A castle and several churches.
Dalemain also offers ample parking for production, technical crew, make-up and wardrobe vehicles and location caterers' vans.
Jane Eyre at Dalemain
In London Weekend Television's production of Jane Eyre, Dalemain provides the exterior of Gateshead Hall, Jane's childhood home, and the Mediaeval Courtyard and 16th century Great Barn provide the exteriors and interiors of Lowood Institution.
The Reverend William Carus Wilson, nephew by marriage of Edward Hasell of Dalemain (1765 - 1826) founded the Clergy Daughters' School at Cowan Bridge (now Casterton School) and was the inspiration for the character of Mr Brocklehurst the founder of Lowood Institution.
Charlotte Brontë drew upon her unhappy memories of her stay at school for her heart-rending description of life at Lowood Institution.
Songs of Praise
The BBC filmed Songs of Praise at Dalemain Historic House & Gardens as part of the Eden Valley production which was broadcast in the summer of 2004
Diane Louise Jordan, one of the show’s most popular presenters, was filming in the enchanting gardens, picking apples from the ancient 18th century apple trees.
The young girls of the Amabile choir from Kendal were seen singing both in the Tudor Knot Garden, surrounding the fountain and on the stairs of the Entrance Hall.
Mrs Jane Hasell McCosh, who lives at Dalemain says “the garden was still looking fantastic during filming, even so late in the season. It changes every week and despite the long dry summer, visitors were able to enjoy the delights of the gardens right into the autumn. The Virginia creeper was turning a wonderful shade of red, and the white garden was looking fresh and charming. An abundance of colour from late flowering perennials, annuals and autumn leaves, added to the atmosphere of relaxing calm that makes a visit to Dalemain an absolute pleasure”.

For the last two years Julia Stanton and Gina Farncombe have been painting portraits of people living in the Ullswater valley and last year they were joined by Beatrice Hasell-McCosh who is contributing landscapes. Together, they have painted farmers and other local residents born between the wars and who have lived in the valley for over 30 years.
