The recent warm weather has really brought the Gardens along and they are looking beautiful! Our famous Himalayan blue poppies (Meconopsis Grandis Dalemain) are on show in the Low Garden, and the roses along the terrace are smelling divine.

The poppies originally arrived at Dalemain after being gifted to Sylvia McCosh by George Sheriff, who discovered the seedlings growing in Bhutan in 1934. The Meconopsis thrive at Dalemain and each year from late May to mid-June, they put on a fabulous display. These poppies are available to buy at the Plant Centre here at Dalemain for those who want to bring the elegance of the Meconopsis to their own gardens. If the weather continues as it is, they will begin to turn in the latter half of this month, so be sure to visit us soon to see them at their finest.

Another highlight in the Gardens are the numerous varieties of old-fashioned roses which decorate the front of the house, the Terrace and the Rose Walk. Dalemain is home to over 150 varieties of rose whose origins can be traced back through the centuries. The Dalemain Rose Day, on Thursday 21st June, is an ideal opportunity to discover more about our roses and where they came from. To learn more about this event, please visit the event page here.

We are also looking forward to this year’s Plant Fair which will take place on Sunday 17th June. We have a stellar selection of nurseries coming to exhibit their plants, alongside artisan food producers and craftspeople. There will be tours of the garden, led by Jane Hasell-McCosh, as well as delicious Dalemain cream teas being served on the garden’s Terrace and in our Mediaeval Hall Tea Room. It is looking to be a fantastic day, so we do hope we see you there! Entry is free to the Fair, and special discounted rates are available for those wanting to visit the House & Gardens as well. For more information about this event, please click here.

As a final note, our Gardens are open on Fridays as well from May to September (10am – 4:30pm) so that you can see the poppies and roses at their absolute best. So do come along to see our award-winning Gardens this summer; you won’t regret it!
