For the past five months, starting with the World’s Original Marmalade Awards & Festival in March, filming of Dalemain’s Gardens has been commissioned by NHK, a major Japanese network. The result is ‘Dalemain’s Magical Garden’, an hour and a half documentary to be broadcast on 20th August at 7:30pm on primetime Japanese television.

Japanese visitors have always been famous for their love of the Lakes and English gardens, making Dalemain the ideal home for such a programme. The Japanese have also always been keen supporters of the Marmalade Awards – six Artisan Gold winners in 2016 were from Japan, with several attending the Awards ceremony at Dalemain. The Festival was therefore a perfect feature in what has gone on to become a fully immersive documentary into Dalemain’s historic gardens and the ways in which they change as the year progresses, with the Dalemain meconopsis blooming and the Rose Walk bursting into life.

Jane Hasell-McCosh, owner of Dalemain says “I am so delighted that our gardens have been recognised for their beauty, and that NHK have seen the potential for this documentary. The gardens are extremely close to my heart, and it has been fantastic to take the film crew through the stages of the garden every month, showing them all of the facets that create such a wonderful place of tranquillity.”

It is hoped that the Japanese people watching the documentary will enjoy the opportunity to immerse themselves in a true English garden, and that some of them will be able in the future to visit Dalemain and see the reality for themselves.
