Marmalade for a Friend is giving people a special way to say thank you this year. Following a year like no other, organisers wanted to offer entrants a way to show their appreciation to the friends and family who have made such a difference in 2020. Thus, the ‘Marmalade for a Friend’ category was born.

Marmalade For a Friend

The idea of thanking your friends, family or even kind strangers with marmalade has sparked a chord around the globe. Organisers have been touched and delighted by the jars that have arrived, and the stories that have accompanied them.

Entrants have been honest and warm, from a marmalade dedicated to ‘everyone who has ever given me encouragement in my life’, to the jar given in memory of ‘John, a lover of good marmalade who died last year.’ One jar is decorated with a rainbow, so synonymous with current events. Another is from a batch created as Christmas presents.

Some jars even come with comments from the friends themselves! A notable example is an entry from the winner of the Australian Marmalade Awards. She was encouraged to enter by a supportive friend. This same friend has sent a poem detailing the triumph of the winning marmalade, and their hopes for the international competition. Another bears the accolade that although ‘nothing beats drinks with friends, this is a close second!’

The popularity of this category is not limited to the UK. As well as Australia, it has received entries from countries including the Czech Republic, Taiwan and Japan. A Japanese participant sent a yuzu marmalade that they have created in the hopes that it will encourage their ‘smallest 5-year-old friend’ to develop a love for the preserve.

The entries have surprised and delighted Awards founder Jane Hasell-McCosh, who created the category. She says: ‘I knew that we wanted to do something to mark 2020, which has been a year unlike any other. I felt that so many of us have relied more than ever on the love and kindness of friends, family and strangers. It has been so moving to see that connecting with so many people. Homemade food is such a wonderful way of saying thank you, and I think the entries coming in really show that. With a week left to go until the competitions close, we can’t wait to see what further stories there are still to come.’

The Marmalade For a Friend category is part of the Homemade Marmalade Awards, which raise money for Hospice at Home Carlisle & North Lakeland. The results will be announced on 20th June 2021, as part of the annual Dalemain Plant fair, which will have a marmalade twist this year.

The Awards take place with the generous support of Fortnum & Mason, Rathbones, Armstrong Watson, Thursday Cottage and Lycetts.
