Dalemain Rose Day is a unique opportunity for keen horticulturists who want to learn more about Dalemain’s fascinating collection of over 100 old-fashioned roses. Archivist and rose enthusiast Frances Wilkins will be running this workshop, which will include a full rose presentation and history, a special rose themed lunch and a tour of the Dalemain roses in the historic gardens.

Squire Williams Hasell of Dalemain ordered plants for his garden from the 1775 catalogue of John and George Telford, seedsmen and nurserymen of York. This catalogue listed 41 varieties of roses. There are 18th century roses growing in the garden today and nearly half of the varieties originated in the 1800’s.

This day celebrates Dalemain’s contribution to our understanding of the history of roses with talks, exhibitions and a garden tour. We will look at the gardeners who have developed the garden here, the roses listed in early garden catalogues, invoices for roses planted at Dalemain over the centuries and the breeders who produced the different varieties that will be seen during a tour of the garden in the afternoon.

The rose theme will be continued in the lunch which will include homemade scones with rose petal jelly, rose lemonade and salads with edible plants from the garden.

Various items will be available for purchase, including Sylvia Mary McCosh’s books Between Two Gardens: The Diary of Two Border Gardens (1982) and North Country Tapestry (1991), greetings cards of Dalemain roses and a selection of award-winning marmalades.

Everyone attending the day will receive a complimentary copy of the booklet The Tale of 100 Dalemain Roses.

For people travelling from Dumfries and Galloway, there will be a coach/minibus service from Stranraer with pre-arranged pick-up points along the A75. Please contact Frances to book this service.
